Who's Gary?

Butterbutt Games is a tiny independent studio making small, strange, pixel-art games.

The name comes from the yellow-rumped warbler, a little songbird that birders call a "butterbutt." Gary is one. He runs quality assurance. Self-appointed.

Our games are best played sitting down. Please stand up once in a while. Gary insists.

FAQ

Frequently avoided questions.

Is this an AI slop cannon?

Yes. A carefully aimed one. Our games are made with a lot of generative AI: code, art, sound, sometimes the first draft of a joke. Then a human plays every build, throws most of it out, and keeps pushing until it's actually fun. Slop, but seasoned.

Who actually makes these?

One storyteller with a lot of ideas, strong opinions, and zero ability to write code. The AI does the typing. The human does the taste. Gary does quality assurance, which is mostly complaining.

So is any of it hand-made?

The ideas, the stories, the design calls, and every "no, do it again" are 100% human. The pixels and the code usually start with an AI prompt that ends in "make no mistakes." It makes mistakes. Then everything gets tweaked, re-rolled, and bullied into shape. If you want a studio that hand-places every pixel, we love them too. We are not them.

Why are they free?

Most of them are. It's hard to charge full price for a flaming-bag simulator, and we'd rather you play than pay. The bigger ones, like Death & Dividends, will cost about as much as a vending machine snack.

Do you tell Steam about the AI?

Yes. Steam requires developers to disclose AI-generated content, and our store pages will say it plainly. No hiding it behind a trailer.

Will the games be janky?

Occasionally. Lovingly. When we find bugs, we fix them. When you find bugs, email hello@butterbuttgames.com and Gary will add them to his list of grievances.

Can I pitch a game idea?

Please do. If it makes us laugh, it might be playable by next weekend. That's the upside of a slop cannon: it reloads fast.

Is Gary AI?

Gary would like it on the record that he is a yellow-rumped warbler and a professional. His pixels had AI help. His attitude is his own.

Why "Butterbutt"?

Two reasons. The official one: birders really do call the yellow-rumped warbler a "butterbutt." The unofficial one involves a gaming chair and too many hours in it. We'll let you work that out.
